About the track

Sam: After Fedivision had initiated me to the Fedi music scene, Radio Free Fedi provided me with a constant source of music from a vast catalogue of Fedi Artists. Listening along and discovering a wealth of new (to me) talent whilst working certainly made the days more comfortable throughout last year.

On Comfy’s sister ‘Specialist’ channel RFF even gave me a platform to present a radio show of the monthly mixtapes I’d put together from music discovered in the Fediverse, a great deal of which I’d found via the Comfy Channel.

This whole process of engagement with the Fedi music scene also awoke a long-dormant musically-creative side of myself. When I first reached out to Stefan (having found his music whilst compiling the mixtapes) to see if he’d be open to me laying down some lyrics on one of his tracks, I was stunned to receive such an open-armed response. We’ve been working on several tracks since and ‘Think Twice’ is the first one where we’ve taken it to a new level by bringing in the mixing mastery of AxWax.

Not long after finding RFF I discovered Bonkwave, whose community immediately made me feel welcome and at home. It was in this community I first came across Ax. He had put out a call for someone to quickly pen some lyrics to a Dixie Swing track. I responded and in no time we had a track for a Bonkwave compilation album. Already aware of his production skills, and frustrated at my own lack of technical expertise when trying to pair my vocals to Stefan’s music, it felt like a no-brainer to ask Ax if he’d fancy joining Stefan and myself in our fledgling Secret Deal collaborative endeavour. I’m so glad he said yes.

In Think Twice I feel like I’m channeling my inner-Robyn. I didn’t even know she existed until hearing the sounds Stefan had created which brought her bubbling out. What I love most about the track is the collaboration that has brought it about. I spent too many decades of my life never collaborating out of shyness and from what I think they call imposter syndrome, so to have finally released those shackles with these guys is something I very much cherish. I put it down to the community - the overwhelming presence of welcoming and accommodating behaviour that resonates through the Fedi - I suppose I have finally found a place in which I feel comfy enough to express myself.
